Why Does RPCC Intervene?

Substance Misuse and College Drinking Is a Big Deal to RPCC.

Substance misuse prevention is crucial for college communities to ensure the well-being and academic success of students. It helps create a safe and supportive learning environment for all. By addressing substance misuse, colleges can promote healthy behaviors, reduce potential harm, and support students in making positive choices that contribute to their overall success and well-being. Consequences for students suffering from substance misuse may include:

  1. Academic Impairment: Substance misuse can lead to poor academic performance, attendance issues, inability to focus, and difficulty in retaining information, ultimately affecting the student's overall academic success.
  2. Health Risks: Substance misuse can result in various physical and mental health problems, such as addiction, impaired judgment, risk of overdose, mental health disorders, and other long-term health complications.
  3. Legal and Disciplinary Ramifications: Students engaged in substance misuse may face legal consequences if their actions violate campus policies or local laws. This can lead to disciplinary actions, such as suspension or expulsion from the college, as well as legal repercussions outside of the academic environment.

It's important for college communities to address substance misuse in order to support the well-being and success of students.

While some see college drinking, even to excess, as a harmless rite of passage, it often results in adverse consequences for our students attending our college. Some consequences include:

  1. Academic fallout: Missed classes, poor school performance, withdrawal from courses, and dropping out
  2. Health problems: Alcohol use disorder and other alcohol-related problems, such as sleep issues and depression
  3. Acute risks: Impaired driving, unsafe sexual behavior, fights, sexual assaults

Even students who don’t drink may experience secondhand effects, such as disrupted study and sleep, or being the victim of an alcohol-related assault.

College communities need to address substance misuse and college drinking to support the well-being and success of students. Both are a big deal to us at RPCC. Although the problem is complex and challenging, we believe at RPCC, together we can reduce the likelihood of alcohol-related harm to our students. That’s why RPCC is committing to using an evidence-based intervention plan.
