Policy: Incivility

Document Number: 2.032
Title: Incivility Policy
Effective Date:
Revised Dated: 10/2/18; 10/12/18

POLICY

In the case of incivility, the College’s Incivility Protocol provides for removal of the uncivil student immediately from the campus to maintain student/teacher integrity and essential pedagogical decorum.  For the purpose of this policy, incivility is defined as any words or behavior that disrupts teaching or learning (face-to-face or distance learning).

Some examples of incivility include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Heckling
  • Making distracting noise
  • Sending or receiving electronic messages outside of instructor-approved use
  • Or otherwise interfering with the orderly process or respectful climate of the classroom

This policy also applies to all class-related functions sponsored by River Parishes Community College.

If the incident is threatening or violent, Gonzales Police Department has jurisdiction and should be notified immediately, and the River Parishes Community College Discipline Code takes precedence.  If the incident is one of nonviolent incivility, the student removed must arrange a conference with his or her instructor to discuss and resolve the problem resulting from the uncivil incident before being readmitted to the class.
