RPCC Course- Commercial Vehicle Operations
RPCC offers Tractor Trailer Driving training resulting in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
240 Hours $5,500.00 This course prepares students for employment as professional commercial drivers and follows all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules, regulations, and guidelines. Classroom theory and behind-the-wheel training is provided covering topics such as DOT rules and regulations; pre and post trip inspections; backing and maneuvering; driving on rural, urban, and interstate highways; handling cargo; hours of service; and defensive driving.
To be eligible for enrollment into this course, students MUST:
- be at least 18 years of age
- have a valid LA Driver's License with no flags/blocks
- pass a Department of Transportation physical
- obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Screen (from the physician of your choice) no more than 30 days prior to class start date. (cost varies)
- obtain a Class A Learner’s Permit through the LA Office of Motor Vehicles -Find a location near you

General Knowledge Part 1 -needed for Class A, Class B, and Class B Bus
General Knowledge Part 2 -needed for Class A, Class B, and Class B Bus
Air Brakes -needed for Class A, Class B, and Class B Bus
Combination Part 1 -needed for Class A
Combination Part 2 -needed for Class A
Passenger -needed for Class B Bus
School Bus -needed for Class B Bus
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to test for one of the following licenses: CDL Class A-tractor-trailer; CDL Class B-straight truck; or CDL Class B-passenger/school bus. This final skills test is administered by a state-approved examiner.
River Parishes Community College and your funding source will need copies of all the following items prior to acceptance into the program:
- DOT Physical
- DOT Drug Screen – Results must be NEGATIVE
- Commercial Learner’s Permit
- Driver’s License
- Social Security Card
- Approved Funding or Self Pay
- Current FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Query (obtained by RPCC).
