If Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav taught us anything, it is to prepare for natural disasters. With this lesson in mind, River Parishes Community College Professor Dr. Iris Henry, VISTA Volunteer David Eidelman, and RPCC students travelled to 6th Ward Elementary School in Vacherie to help students learn the value of emergency preparedness.
RPCC students from 7 different college classes taught 6th Ward students to plan for natural disasters through interactive learning. Through a series of skits and games, the RPCC students taught the elementary students necessary survival information, such as the value and necessity of an evacuation plan and what to include in a survival kit. The students also received a sample survival kit that included first aid supplies and water.
The emergency preparedness program is in its fourth year, and fundraising for the program’s fifth year has already begun. State Farm Insurance Company and the Louisiana Campus Compact generously sponsored this year’s program through grants and donated supplies. Thanks to the generous donation of Entergy Corporation, the program will continue into its fifth year. Entergy donated $500 to buy supplies for next year’s program.
