River Parishes Community College prepares to meet student needs with the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program.
Designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, Federal TRIO programs have assisted Louisiana’s students since the mid ‘60s. Over the years, TRIO programs have expanded to provide transfer assistance, four-year college tours, study skill workshops and cultural activities—all in an effort to increase secondary education completion rates.
River Parishes Community College was one of eleven Louisiana postsecondary institutions to be awarded this grant opportunity. As the only new award in the state and only one of 200 new awards across the U.S., RPCC will enjoy the same student support services as those provided by Louisiana State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southeastern Louisiana University. What this means for the RPCC student who qualifies is $1.1 million in federal funding over the next five years to cover free tutoring, financial aid, career counseling and transfer assistance.
The goal is to pair a student’s hard work and commitment with the proper institutional tools and resources. Yet it takes more than funding to help students reach their potential, and RPCC understands that selecting the right director and staff will be essential—creating new jobs in higher education. Additionally, marketing strategies and materials are in development, pointing the way to academic success in Louisiana.
