The proposed merger with River Parishes Community College (RPCC) and the Northshore Technical College-Ascension Campus (LTC) receives the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) approval, opening new doors of opportunity to Southern Louisiana students—with efficiency and comprehensiveness at the core.
SACS, responsible for River Parishes Community College’s accreditation, made official the RPCC and LTC merger on Thursday, September 30. “This means greater opportunities for the students of both campuses, because each campus will have unprecedented access to the resources of the other,” said Dr. Joe Ben Welch, Chancellor of RPCC.
With more students seeking educational opportunities at Louisiana community colleges, thanks in part to the legislature’s Louisiana GRAD Act, academic growth is at the heart of the merger. By way of example, RPCC is expanding associate degrees and technical programs. Expanded associate degrees include: Associate of Arts/Louisiana Transfer Degree (AALT), Associate of Science/Louisiana Transfer Degree (ASLT), Associate of General Studies and Associate of Science in Teaching (Grades 1-5). Additionally, expanded technical degrees are: Automotive Technology, Business Office Technology, Nurse Assistant, Drafting & Design Technology, Electric Line Technician, Industrial Instrumentation, Nondestructive Examination, Practical Nursing, Process Technology and Welding.
At the same time, RPCC recognizes that curriculum and student body growth require additional funding and facilities. To meet higher enrollment demands, the RPCC future strategic plan includes building a permanent campus by 2014, utilizing funds through Louisiana Capital Outlay, the RPCC Foundation and grants. Community needs will also be met through newly created Centers of Excellence—establishing the school as a flagship for technical career programs.
